This research paper: 5 pages in length. Maryse Conde's "Land of Many Colors" and part II of "The Harp and the Shadow," by Alejo Carpentier, ponder the impossibility of telling everything when narrating the story of a person's life. When comparing why the story of these people must be told in each case, it is important to realize that not each and every individual detail is pertinent when telling one's life tale. Indeed, imagination and facts prove to influence the doctor's account of Berthe's and Antoine's lives, while Columbus' account of his own life also comes across just as peppered with a mixture of illusory and truth as he prepares to confess his sins. Inasmuch as these elements exist within the boundaries of both tales, the limitations that exist to influence the way each story is told are somehow both apparent and obscure at the same time. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
