This research paper: 5 pages in length. Victorian Literature represents myriad ideas of a political, social and cultural nature. That psychology, the theory of evolution and Marxism are reflected during this era mark a time when the literary hierarchy was expressing pertinent issues by way of prose. At the same time, however, the very nature of 'art' was undergoing a significant metamorphosis, in that writers such as Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Alfred Tennyson and Christina Rossetti set the stage for Western literary criticism. Even with all this change going on, there were still two more important thematic approaches that consumed Victorian literature: the struggle for gender rights and the acceptance of death. One might readily argue that Christina Rossetti held the most profound influence upon twentieth-century writers in England and America with regard to the thematic approach to death and female rights. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
