Cachexia is characterized by a dramatic loss of triglycerides from adipose tissue and proteins from skeletal muscle. Although it superficially resembles starvation, it is virtually immune to nutritional intervention. It is a complex syndrome and accounts for nearly a third of cancer deaths.
