ESSAY ON: Mexico as a “Poison” to the U.S.?: A Discussion of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Prediction

Number of Pages 5

This research paper: A 5 page discussion of the historic and contemporary relationship between Mexico and the U.S. Emerson’s prediction that Mexico would prove to be a “poison” to the U.S. was made in response to the certainty that vast western lands would be taken from Mexico by the United States during the Mexican American War (1846 to 1848). Emerson was concerned that Mexico’s proximity to the United States would prove to be an economic and social drain on the U.S. His use of the metaphor “poison” reflects the intensity of his feelings on this subject. To Emerson Mexico’s political sovereignty and even her diverse culture was a threat to U.S. sovereignty and cultural congruity. This paper uses the example of Mexican immigration to the U.S. to conclude that in reality Mexican and U.S. interaction has proven to be more positive than negative. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
