Josephine Tey is one such author whose treatment of Richard III is more than kind; with the help of her protagonist detective Alan Grant, Tey works literary magic in The Daughter of Time to illustrate her perception of a man whose character she defends. Desmond Seward, on the other hand, takes a more pragmatic approach to uncovering the truth of Richard's legacy in Richard III: England's Black Legend, contending that his murderous ways placed a significantly black mark upon this period of English history.
