A vast majority of African-American women were brought to the United States to work as slaves, a reality that ultimately shaped all subsequent relationships Black women had within African-American families and communities, with employers and among each other, as well as created the political context for Black women's intellectual work. This conditioned barrier to uncovering the self has proven difficult to overcome in the day-to-day approach to enlightenment; however, Black women have found an outlet for such oppression within the unrestrictive boundaries of literature.
