This research paper: This is a 12 page paper discussing the relationship between brothers Raymond and Charlie in “Rain Man”. The story “Rain Man” was originally conceived by Barry Morrow and written as a screenplay by Ronald Bass and Barry Morrow for a movie directed by Barry Levinson and starring Dustin Hoffman as Raymond and Tom Cruise as Charlie. The novel “Rain Man” was written by Leonore Fleischer and based on the screenplay by Bass and Morrow. Regardless of the source, the story involves the developing relationship between the central characters of brothers Charlie and Raymond. Charlie, a self-obsessed, materialistic car salesman who had long since abandoned a relationship with his father discovers that upon his father’s death the inheritance has been left to a brother he never realized he had, Raymond. Raymond, an autistic savant has been institutionalized since he was a child and considered a threat to the young Charlie. Charlie “kidnaps” Raymond from his institution and the remaining story is based on their growing acceptance and relationship as they drive across the country in six days. The development of both characters is unique but dependent on the growth of the other. Charlie becomes more sensitive to Raymond’s needs eventually realizing that he values the relationship with his brother more so than money. Raymond also lessens the restrictions of his routine only to realize that the brother he once believed he had harmed is allowing him freedom to discover new aspects of himself he never knew were possible.
