Number of Pages 6

This research paper: This 6 page report discusses Octavia Butler’s 1987 novel “Dawn” in which she presents the theme of slavery in the service of another beings’ hierarchy and sense of survival and order. “dawn” became the first book in a trilogy, followed by “Adulthood Rites” (1988) and “Imago” (1989). Nuclear war has decimated Earth in “Dawn” and human beings are almost extinct. “People” from another planet arrive and set about saving the humans and restoring the environment of Earth. They place most of the humans into suspended animation so they can begin the laborious processes required for the planet’s recovery. However, the aliens have their own agenda and that is to enslave humans to meet their own needs. Themes of slavery are constantly present in “Dawn” and present a ways to reconsider the horrors and absolute subjugation that is slavery. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
