This research paper: 7 pages in length. Reaching back for the past is an appropriate way to describe the elements of time and memory in Stafford's poem. In his mind is a recollection of how the farm felt when he lived there, both tangibly and metaphorically; as the years pass and he attempts to connect once again with this memory, he is disheartened when he is not able to rejoin the reminiscence he stores in his mind. In three short stanzas, Kooser paints a detailed mental image of a family who faced some type of adversity that caused them to flea, who comprised the family, what their economic situation was like and the state in which they quickly abandoned the farmhouse. At the same time, however, Kooser presents this tremendous insight in a wholly simplistic literary manner that child or adult can understand. The factor of time is clearly portrayed through the descriptive overtones so as to present an obvious cycle of events that transformed from contentment to panic. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
